Abstract art is the representation of the subconscious mind of an artist and does not attempt to depict any exact visual reality. It uses shapes, colours, forms and schematised gestural marks to achieve its effect. Abstract means uncertain so this artform also carriers some dots of uncertainty. It applies to art that uses forms, signs and patterns which have no source at all in an external visual reality, reflecting its quest for rationality and an independent order from external reality. If looked at for the first time, it would be really difficult to make anything out of it. Since the meaning is unfixed, it keeps on shifting depending on where, when and who is looking at it. Abstract art is also referred as concrete or non-objective art. No one was ever given a manual to interpret or appreciate this art terrain, so it is slightly untethered from the scope of identifiable things. Joshua Reynolds once said that the beauty of form alone makes paintings great without the need of any assistance from other qualities. This expresses the aesthetic premise behind abstract painting on canvas that formal qualities matter more than the subject matter. It is not the apple, for instance, but the colours used, their placement on the canvas, the arrangement scheme, used patterns and their relation among each other that is important. It is often seen as carrying a moral dimension of order, purity, simplicity and spirituality. With the industrial revolution in the 19th century, representation took a non-naturalist approach with styling through simplifying and flattening of subject matter, called abstraction. Many of the core ways of human interaction with the world, such as religion, have been abstract, and humans have always been indulging in some or the other form of abstraction either knowingly or unknowingly, at least once in their lifetimes. While abstraction stemmed from cubism, futurism and expressionism often referred to as geometric abstract art- all marked by unique choice of colour, fragmented shapes, multiple perspectives and subject projecting chaotic mess, abstract art is considered on its own terms, free from the burden of conventional style of art.

This improvisational approach imparts directness which provokes strong emotional responses through large scale dynamic gestures and expansive fields of colour which can be clearly seen in modern abstract art. The oldest examples of abstract patterns are cave carvings and marks on pottery and textiles. That was just simple abstract art. Abstract art painting is not just about painting and drawing, there is abstract sculpture too. This art form started with Kandinsky, who believed realism itself to be abstraction and painted human emotions, and witnessed many other famous abstract artists like Kupka, Delaunay, Malevich, Mondrian, Newman, De Kooning, Frankenthaler and others but the most influential was Jackson Pollock for his head scratching action paintings which made him a hero in the world of abstract art. In 1915, Paul Klee wrote, “the more horrifying this world becomes, the more art becomes abstract” this stands true of the chaotic mess and anxiety expressed in abstract painting that is an imaginary portrayal of the harsh reality that is disturbing yet unique, aesthetic and impressive. Today, the most compelling abstract work often builds upon traditions of the medium, recycling and reinterpreting previous approaches towards the creation of something new. Abstract canvas painting has been the most popular one for years but in India, artists have incorporated their own elements of worship by painting deities in an abstract manner. Ganesha abstract painting, modern durga abstract painting, abstract krishna painting, radhakrishna abstract painting, abstract buddha painting are a few mentions. Abstract ganesha painting has been painted numerous times because of the ritualistic association with the deity. Other than ganesh abstract painting, woman abstract painting is also often seen.
